CHARACTER PERSONALITY: At first glance Finnick Odair is all the around, charming, rich playboy with a different girl on his arm every night that he’s in the Capitol. He’s adored in Capitol as a heart throb and his smile is famous to all the citizens.

Below that smile however is troubled man. Finnick won the games at the age of fourteen and on his sixteenth birthday, the President begin to sell him to the highest bidder for sex, holding his family and his love Annie Cresta hostage by threatening to kill them if Finnick didn’t comply. The lifestyle drove him to dark places, and Beattie once said, they were lucky to still have Finnick with him after what he’d been through.

His family and Annie were important to him. In the Mockingjay, he went mad for worry for Annie’s safety, knowing she might be tortured in the Capitol to punish him for being with the rebellion. One of his coping strategies when reality was slipping and he wanted to avoid dreams, he would knot endless fishing knots to give him something to do.

Despite his weakened mental health state, the real Finnick was still in there. Finnick has a self depreciating humour. It comes across when he interacts with the other tributes, especially Katniss. He often used the humour, to wind her up and bring her out of herself. It shone through in every situation along with his inner strength.


Finnick had an inner strength to see things through. He joined the rebellion against the Capitol because he knew life should be better, and put his life on the line to bring the Capitol down. During his second time in the arena, whatever he was going through he protected Katniss and Peeta so they could become the symbol of rebellion.


WORLD:
Finnick comes from a future version of our world, after the world as we know it has come to an end, and earth has broken and changed it’s shape. Out of this has risen a new kingdom called Panem. Panem is based in what was once known and is divided into Thirteen districts and the main Capitol. The Capitol is seperated from the districts by the Rocky Mountains which made it safe from attack. The Capitol kept the districts in poverty, fencing the districts in for their own protection. Eventually the districts rebelled against them and went to war on the Capitol. For every Capitol citizen that died, two rebels died. As the Capitol was well protected they quelled the rebellion, and destroyed the Thirteenth District completely.

Once the rebellion was quelled, the Capitol established the Hunger Games, an annual event in which which twenty-four children between the ages of twelve and eighteen, one boy and one girl from each district, are chosen from a lottery and entered into a Battle Royale competition where they must fight each other to the death until only one remains standing. The event serves as reminder that the Capitol has complete control over the districts and could obliterate the remaining districts at any point. In the Capitol it was seen as entertainment were the wealthy betted and sponsored the children ‘tributes’ and watched the events happily on television. Watching the Hunger Games was compulsory in the Districts.


Each of the Districts makes luxury and every day items for the Capitol. In District 4 they are the fishing Disctrict and provide seafood to the Capitol. This is Finnick’s district. In the districts they were controlled by propaganda so that they would know nothing of the other districts and their lives to make sure the districts could never band together.

THIRD PERSON:
“KATNIISSS” The name was hissed out. It had been chasing them through six tunnels of the sewers. Finnick turned and found himself facing the lizard mutt and its sharp teeth. He moved his hands to raise his trident and found his hand empty. As the Mutt lunged Finnick woke up in bed in a cold sweat.

Finnick’s fingers clenched into the sheets, as he reassured himself that he was safe. There were no mutts here. He couldn’t shake the dream. Somewhere, those mutts still existed and were looking for them all. He reached across to the bed side table for his water and glugged it down. His fingers then closed around a length of rope and he began knotting it to pass the rest of the night away.

When the morning finally came. Finnick was calm and he walked out of the flat whistling to meet some of the others. He wouldn’t have to face the darkness for another night.

FIRST PERSON:
[Finnick flicks the communicator on and turns it to video. He uses it to capture the Welcomer’s retreating back before he swings it around to himself. Blue eyes look out of a grimy face and he’s primed for combat.]

That man was a little weird, he’s never heard of the Capitol.
[He turns a mega watt smile on though his eyes look grim if you are looking closely] Can someone tell me where I am? Because I am not going to trust the word of guy who doesn’t seem to know basic geography.
